Anuj Kumar Saikia
Mr. Saikia's journey into mushroom cultivation began after transitioning from his career in software engineering. He established Arihan Enterprise and the Sewabikash Foundation in Guwahati, which have become key platforms in his entrepreneurial success.
Through the Sewabikash Foundation, he has led numerous initiatives to train individuals in mushroom cultivation, enabling many to adopt it as a sustainable source of livelihood. His success has been supported by strong technical guidance from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kamrup and the Mushroom Research and Training Centre at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat — a collaborative effort that has allowed him to excel in the field and share his knowledge, contributing to the economic empowerment of many in the region.
Prestigious Recognition: In 2024, he was awarded the Progressive Mushroom Grower Award by the Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan, Himachal Pradesh. His nomination was supported by the All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRP) on Mushroom at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to mushroom cultivation.
Kanaklata Das
Ms Kanaklata Das is a visionary entrepreneur from Guwahati, Assam, best known for her pioneering work in mushroom farming and value addition through Arihan Enterprise, in partnership with Sewabikash Foundation. Since its inception in 2014, her venture has provided training to over 10,000 farmers across Northeast India, making a notable impact in the sector.
Beyond traditional mushroom cultivation, Kanaklata's enterprise develops unique, value-added products from mushroom that are nutrient-rich and healthy. Her organisation is a platform for inclusive empowerment — about 80% of the cultivators are women — and she highlights how mushroom farming and food processing are especially suited to women farmers.
She regularly participates in events like Nandinii, promoting not only her mushroom innovations but also local indigenous varieties — such as rice (red, black, komol and joha), ginger, turmeric, squashes and tea. Her leadership transforms agriculture into a livelihood that enriches both women and rural communities, while preserving regional food traditions and fostering economic resilience.
